Gold leaf in Kanazawa: choosing a workshop and a piece to take home
Apply gold leaf to a small box or hand mirror, then take it home as a reminder of the trip. In Kanazawa, a workshop can fit neatly into a walk through the tea districts. If you also want to see how gold leaf is made, choose a venue with both displays and activities. When buying a finished piece, look beyond the shine to its material and how to care for it.

A workshop in the tea district, or a visit with displays
Hakukokan is an option for seeing process displays; Bikazari Asano suits adding a gold-leaf activity to a Higashi Chaya walk. Both belong to Hakuichi, but their locations and courses differ. Confirm the venue name before booking.
- Hakuichi main store and Hakukokan: Morito, Kanazawa. Suitable for combining displays and a workshop at one venue, with gold-leaf application and leaf-transfer courses.
- Bikazari Asano: Higashi Chaya district. Add gold leaf to a small box, small hand mirror or plum-shaped dish as part of a neighbourhood walk.
The 2026 price-revision notice lists the Meijin course’s plum-shaped dish, small box and small hand mirror at ¥2,000 each. Materials and duration vary by course; choose using the official prices and booking guidance. If you want to take your piece away, ask about same-day collection and packaging when booking. Other courses, such as kintsugi, have different prices and collection conditions.
- Start time and duration
- Age restrictions and whether companions may observe
- Whether the finished piece can leave with you that day
- Clothing and baggage precautions
- Cancellation conditions
Check the venue and course on the English booking form
Hakuichi’s English reservation form separates Main Store HAKUKOKAN from Bikazari Asano. It marks the Wizard Course and Gold-leaf Transfer as available only at HAKUKOKAN. Choose the venue first, then check that the course and start time match it. Keep the exact venue name and address with your confirmation rather than navigating to a shop merely because its name contains “Hakuichi”.
A mirror to use, a plate to display
Small mirrors and boxes are easy to picture in daily use and in your luggage. A decorative plate is not necessarily tableware; read the product label before putting food on it. For metal-leaf tableware, check microwave suitability on the label. Edible gold leaf and craft gold leaf are different products.
Appearance alone does not tell you whether a gold-coloured finish is gold leaf or another metal. Check the base material—wood, resin or porcelain, for example—and any protective finish. For daily use, think about care; for display, consider size and where it will go. That makes it easier to choose something you will enjoy after the trip.
Before packing it for the journey
For easily scratched surfaces or three-dimensional pieces, ask for packaging that prevents movement inside the box. Before arranging international shipping, check delivery costs, insurance, customs duties and damage procedures. Ask the shop whether the purchase qualifies for tax-free shopping.
