Colourful Shibori Souvenirs in Arimatsu: Marimomen Tenugui
A tenugui lets you bring colour home without adding much weight to your bag. Marimomen in Arimatsu makes brightly coloured shibori textiles, giving a walk through the historic town a small, practical shopping purpose.

First, the address matters: the old shop near Arimatsu Station has closed, and sales have moved to the workshop. Do not follow an older article straight to the former storefront.
Look at the pattern folded and open
A long cloth changes character when folded. The small area you see while drying your hands is different from the whole pattern displayed on a wall. Decide how you want to use it, then look at the relevant view.
Marimomen describes the discoveries that come with each dyeing session as part of its work. If a sample can be opened for you, look at the overlaps of colour and the areas left white rather than selecting from a folded edge alone.

The workshop is the current destination
Open the workshop’s opening calendar. The workshop warns that map apps can lead to the rear of the building: use the approach shown in its official workshop directions, rather than the old shop or the Tokaido-side entrance.
The official relocation notice gives the address as 2324 Arimatsu, Midori Ward, Nagoya, with telephone 052-693-9030. Products are sold and dyeing experiences held at the workshop.

Shopping and dyeing need different plans
The general workshop page was published in July 2023. Use it to frame an enquiry, with the workshop confirming the current fee and date in its reply. It is separate from the June 2026 festival sessions.
| Published general-workshop details | For your booking enquiry |
|---|---|
| Price | The 2023 page lists ¥3,000 per tenugui and ¥3,500 per handkerchief; confirm the current amount when booking. |
| Time and group | About 90 minutes, for two to six people. |
| Age | High-school age and above; younger participants must be accompanied by a guardian. |
| Booking | Fully reservation-based. Send the date, time and group details through the official enquiry form at least a week ahead. The workshop’s confirmation email completes the booking. |
| Taking work home | That page says same-day collection. Bring a plastic bag, rubber gloves and clothes and shoes that can get dirty. |
A shopping visit needs time to compare colours. A workshop needs its own reservation conditions and a larger place in your day: use the current workshop information to select the activity and find its duration.
Past shibori-festival announcements apply to those event dates. They should not be used as the timetable for an ordinary visit.
Choose a job for the cloth at home
Fabric folds easily and travels well alongside other souvenirs. If you intend to use it around a fragile purchase, keep another layer of wrapping between the two so the cloth stays clean and dye does not transfer.
Keep the care instructions for the piece you buy. The tenugui souvenir guide offers more ideas for using one. A cloth to display and a cloth to use every day may lead you towards different colours.
