Hakone’s Last Buses and Night-Time Taxis: Plan the Journey Back First

There is no single last-bus time for Hakone. It depends on the stop, destination and day. Settle the return before heading out for dinner or a bath, rather than looking for transport after you leave.

Match the stop, direction and travel date

Use the official timetable for your boarding point and direction. The opposite side of a stop with the same name may serve a different destination. Check weekday, holiday and seasonal notes, then save the relevant screen.

Connect the bus arrival with the train you need afterwards. Catching the last bus is not enough if it misses your reserved train. A saved timetable and a note of your hotel name also help if your battery runs low.

A restaurant’s last order is not your transport deadline

A restaurant staying open late does not mean public transport runs equally late. Include paying the bill and walking to the stop when choosing a dinner reservation. A distance manageable in daylight may be a poor night-time walk on a mountain road.

Have these details ready for a taxi

  • The pickup place’s name and address, plus the entrance where you will wait.
  • Your hotel’s name, address and number of passengers.
  • Luggage and any wheelchair or vehicle requirements.
  • The requested time and a contact telephone number.

Hakone Tozan Taxi’s official FAQ describes 24-hour operation in central Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto. That does not mean an immediate car is available everywhere in Hakone. Request late-night or early-morning transport in advance and ask about pickup and early reservation charges. The listed contact for IP phones is 0465-22-1311.

If you miss the bus, contact your hotel from a safe waiting place

Do not start a long mountain-road walk. Call from somewhere you can wait safely, such as an open facility, and ask about a shuttle or taxi. Agree the pickup point before moving elsewhere. On a disruption day, demand for cars may be higher, making a clear waiting location particularly useful.

For an early Shinkansen from Odawara the next morning, include the station connection when choosing the first leg from your hotel. An evening is easier to enjoy once the route back is settled.
