Mount Hakodate Without the Ropeway: Night-View Transport During the 2026 Closure
The Mount Hakodate Ropeway is closed for maintenance from October 20 to November 8, 2026. The summit observatory remains open. A summit bus or a taxi can still get you to the view during this period; a bus to the ropeway’s lower station cannot.

Choose your way down before setting off. It is easy to spend longer than expected watching the lights spread across the narrow strip of city between the two bays.
The direct option: Route 1 from Hakodate Station
Look for the Mount Hakodate Climbing Bus, Route 1, at bus stop 4 outside Hakodate Station. The city’s tourism guide lists a journey of about 30 minutes without traffic, with a one-way fare of ¥700 for adults or ¥350 for children.
Hakodate Bus lists its 2026 season as April 13 to early November, tied to the mountain road opening. Select your travel date in the official departures from Hakodate Station. Allow for queues and the return journey before booking dinner afterwards.
Three services with very different jobs
- Route 2, the ropeway connection shuttle: all departures are suspended while the ropeway is closed.
- Route 3, the Motomachi and Bay Area loop: serves the lower ropeway station, not the summit.
- Hakodate Night View sightseeing bus: a separate, reservation-based tour. Check the itinerary and summit access for your date rather than treating it as a regular Route 1 departure.
The shared tram-and-bus one-day and two-day passes do not cover the summit bus. Hakodate Bus’s own Kanpass and nationally interoperable transport IC cards are accepted. Our guide to riding local buses in Japan explains the boarding and payment routines you may encounter.
At the top, find the bus stop first
Save the official summit departures before you go. On arrival, locate the return stop so you know where to head after taking photos.
The observatory is scheduled to open from 10:00 to 21:00 during maintenance. That closing time is not the last bus time. Work backwards from your chosen departure and leave time to get back to the queue. Aiming for an earlier bus also leaves more room to adjust your evening than relying on the final departure.

A taxi needs a return plan too
A taxi may suit a group or anyone who prefers not to wait outside. The city’s tourism guide advises that you cannot pick up a taxi at the summit: arrange a round trip or another way down. Ask about waiting time, the total fare and the pickup point when booking. If you book only the uphill ride, choose a return bus while planning the trip.
Rental cars, cloud and the November changeover
Private and rental cars are restricted on the mountain road from 16:00 to 21:00, October 1–November 8, 2026. Driving yourself is therefore not a replacement for the ropeway during the main night-view hours.
Before leaving, look at the summit information on the official ropeway website. If cloud is covering the view, an evening around the Bay Area and dinner in town may fit better, with the summit saved for another day. Bring an extra layer for standing outside in autumn.
The road’s winter closure is scheduled to begin at 11:00 on November 9, 2026. The maintenance-period alternatives described here do not extend automatically into winter. For a November visit, plan around both the ropeway reopening notice and the road conditions.
