Tsutanuma in Autumn 2026: Sunrise Reservations or a Daytime Visit?

From October 23 to November 3, 2026, entry to Tsutanuma’s observation deck between 5:00 and 7:30 requires advance booking. Visits from 7:30 to 16:00 do not. Decide whether you are coming for the brief sunrise colours or a walk beside the pond in daylight: the arrangements and cost are different.

At sunrise, book people and parking separately

The observation-deck contribution is ¥2,000 per person. Parking costs a further ¥2,000 per car or ¥1,000 per motorcycle. Two people arriving in one car therefore pay ¥6,000 in total.

Arriving on foot or by taxi does not remove the early-morning deck-ticket requirement. A taxi that parks also needs a parking ticket. A deck ticket alone does not entitle you to park and wait for a space.

Follow the booking link from the official visitor information, selecting admission and parking for your date. Show the QR ticket at reception. The organisers’ FAQ says online sales close at 10:00 the previous day, so arrange this before your final evening of travel.

Plan the journey before dawn

The red scene comes from morning light falling on the beech forest. Build your arrival around admission, reception and the walk from the car park, rather than sunrise time alone. The car park is closed from 20:00 until 4:50 the next morning. Waiting there overnight is not an option.

Bring a light for your footing and warm layers for standing outside before dawn. The organisers advise against early-morning visits with small children, particularly preschoolers, because of the darkness, cold and low deck railings. Daylight may be a better fit for a family outing.

A daytime visit is simpler

From 7:30 to 16:00, there is no advance booking. Pay the parking contribution on arrival in cash: ¥2,000 per car or ¥1,000 per motorcycle. Visitors on foot, by bicycle or by a taxi that does not park are admitted free. If parking is full, visitors are asked to return later.

If sunrise photography is not your priority, daylight makes it easier to fit the pond into a wider trip. Leave time to enjoy the forest as well as the reflections, rather than making it only a quick photo stop.

Walking from Tsuta Onsen and arranging the bus back

The walk from the Tsuta Onsen parking area takes about 10 minutes each way. It includes uneven and unpaved sections; wheelchair users are asked to travel with someone who can assist. Choose footwear suited to wet paths.

For public transport, use the official JR Bus Tohoku Mizuumi service information to select a departure serving Tsuta Onsen. A daytime bus connection does not necessarily get you to a 5:00 entry slot. For a sunrise visit, arrange transport from your accommodation first. For a daytime walk, choose your return departure and leave time to walk back to the stop.

Guests at Tsuta Onsen Ryokan also need the dedicated overnight-guest ticket for early entry. Contact the inn before making arrangements.

If sunrise tickets are unavailable, a daytime visit still brings you to the same pond. Choose between waiting for the morning light and taking a relaxed forest walk, then arrange admission and transport to match. Our guide to local buses in Japan covers boarding and payment.
