Arashiyama Beyond the Bamboo Grove: A Half-Day Walk Around the Crowds

For a half-day in Arashiyama, use the bamboo grove and Togetsukyo Bridge as the two anchors, with a meal or rest along the way. Start from the end nearest your arrival station rather than crossing the district to follow a fixed sightseeing order.

Continue towards Oku-Saga if your time and energy allow, and include the walk back to your departure station when deciding. Treat the older streets as an optional extension, rather than another stop you must squeeze in. The grove can still be busy; this plan gives you more to enjoy without depending on an empty-photo moment.

Different starting points from JR and Hankyu

From JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, start towards the bamboo grove. From Hankyu Arashiyama Station, Togetsukyo Bridge is closer, so begin there.

There is no need to cross the district just to start a standard route.

If arriving in the morning, try the grove or bridge before visitor numbers build. Arriving closer to noon? Check Kyoto’s crowd forecasts or live cameras and leave the busier stop until later.

Keep walking after the bamboo grove

Turn around immediately after the grove and the Arashiyama visit can feel surprisingly brief.

If you have time, continue a little farther towards Oku-Saga.

Away from the centre, both the shopfronts and the flow of people change. Walk through older streets, visit a temple or pause at a tea shop. Think of it as somewhere to slow down, rather than another photograph to collect.

It leaves a different impression from a visit to the grove alone.

Rail routes from Kyoto Station

A direct bus can look like the easy choice from Kyoto Station.

On congested roads, rail can make arrival times easier to judge. Kyoto’s official tourism site also describes routes using JR or a subway-and-Randen combination.

Choose between JR, Hankyu and Randen according to your hotel’s location.

A route with one transfer on the map is not necessarily the more awkward one.

Lunch does not have to be beside Togetsukyo Bridge

Central restaurants can become very busy at lunchtime.

If you have a particular restaurant in mind, check its hours and reservation options. Otherwise, widen the search towards Saga or along the walk back to your station instead of staying on the busiest street.

For lunch, consider the streets along your walking route as well as the restaurants beside the grove.

A short walk can change the choices available.

Arashiyama is popular. Expecting an empty grove creates a large gap between the photograph and the visit.

See the bamboo, walk a little and rest when you need to. For half a day, use the grove and bridge as anchors and decide along the way how far into Saga to go.
