A Fabric Souvenir You Make Yourself: Some no Sato Ochiai
A piece of fabric you have coloured yourself makes a different kind of Tokyo souvenir. At Some no Sato Ochiai, within walking distance of Nakai Station, workshops introduce stencil dyeing and other techniques. For the table-centrepiece workshop, you follow a set design. Look at the finished example and the sequence of steps before booking.

The textiles above the Myoshoji River were displayed for Some no Komichi in 2026. The festival offers another way to explore the dyeing district, on a separate schedule from regular workshop visits.
Start with the object you want to make
Tokyo’s official tourism guide describes a table-centrepiece workshop using 14 stencils and seven colours. It also lists stencil-dyeing and seasonal workshops involving materials such as persimmon tannin, cherry wood and fresh indigo leaves.
The regular table-centre course’s fee, sessions and booking deadline are summarised in the booking checklist below.
GO TOKYO still lists the older ¥4,400/120-minute details. Use the facility’s workshop schedule when booking.
Choose a course, not just the venue
- Table-centre sarasa: the regular course described above uses 14 stencils and seven dye colours.
- Bag stencil dyeing: the facility lists this separately as an irregular workshop, using three to five stencils. Its dates and price are not the regular table-centre booking.
A report of a group making bags does not establish what an individual booking includes. Check the course name, finished object and available date on the facility’s current course list, then confirm the language support you need.
Let the pattern emerge in layers
Edo sarasa creates patterned colour through successive stencils. It is not just a matter of painting a single colour wherever you like. Look at the finished example and the sequence of steps to understand how the pattern takes shape.
Give the workshop its own space in the day. Leaving in a rush for the next attraction misses the point of an activity that rewards attention to small details.

Three questions for your booking
| Before booking | Table-centre sarasa stencil dyeing |
|---|---|
| Cost and duration | ¥4,840 including tax and materials; about 2–2½ hours. Facility information effective from June 2026. |
| Sessions | Normally Wednesday and Saturday at 13:00, Sunday at 10:00. Wednesday sessions are irregular. |
| Booking and clothing | Book through the facility by the previous day and bring an apron. |
| Collection | Ask whether your piece can leave with you that day, needs finishing, or can be delivered. |
| Other courses | Seasonal and group workshops have their own booking conditions. |
- Activity and date: is the course seasonal or available throughout the year?
- Language: can the explanations you need be provided?
- Collection: can the fabric leave with you that day, or does it need finishing or later collection?
Other courses have their own booking deadlines and equipment instructions; follow the guidance for the activity you select.
A short walk into Tokyo’s dyeing district
The address is 2-3-6 Kamiochiai, Shinjuku Ward. Nakai Station serves the Seibu Shinjuku and Toei Oedo lines; Exit A2 is about four minutes away on foot. GO TOKYO lists the facility from 11:00am to 5:00pm, closed on Mondays and during the New Year holidays.
The area’s dyeing history is tied to waterways including the Myoshoji River. A short riverside walk after the workshop connects the piece you made with the neighbourhood where the craft continues.
