Hakkoda autumn colours without a mountain hike: the ropeway and Gourd Line
You can see Hakkoda’s autumn slopes without committing to a mountain hike. Ride up, walk a Gourd Line loop near the upper station, and take the ropeway down. The shorter loop is about 1km and 30 minutes of walking, making it a different outing from a full descent through the mountains.

Start with the shorter loop
The operator lists two Gourd Line circuits: about 1km/30 minutes and 1.8km/60 minutes. Both start from the summit-station area and take in wetland scenery. Add time for photographs and decide on the length after seeing the wind and ground conditions.
There is no need to race around the longer loop. The view from the cabin and the plants beside the path offer different ways to enjoy autumn, even on a short visit. There is some ascent and descent; bring a windproof layer and shoes with grip. Wet boardwalks or icy patches may call for a shorter walk, following local instructions.

A descent to Sukayu is a different trip
The trail towards Sukayu may look like an appealing continuation on a map. The operator describes the Kenashi Paradise Line as a roughly 2½-hour hiking route, with hiking preparation rather than casual sightseeing in mind.
For a non-hiking visit, return to the upper station and ride down. Do not assume there is an easy walking path back to the lower ropeway station, or try to recover time for a bus by taking a mountain descent.
Use the revised 2026 fare page
Following the August 1, 2026 revision, adult fares—junior-high-school age and above—are ¥2,500 return or ¥1,550 one way. Elementary-school children pay ¥700 return or ¥450 one way; younger children travel free.
An older figure remains in the website’s English FAQ. Use the revised fares and operating-hours page when buying. A return ropeway journey suits a short circuit ending where it began.
For March through early November, the published uphill operating period is 9:00–16:20, normally at 15–20-minute intervals, with a ride of about ten minutes. 16:20 is the final uphill departure, not your downhill deadline. Confirm the last descent and the day’s operation at the station before walking.
Build the day around the bus back
The current JR Bus Tohoku timetable includes autumn Mizuumi services from Aomori Station to the ropeway stop. Some continue towards Oirase and Lake Towada; for your return, find the column for Aomori or Shin-Aomori.
Note the outbound departure, arrival at the ropeway and chosen station-bound return. Subtract the ropeway queue, both rides, the walk and rest time to see what fits. Taxis are not permanently stationed here, so missing the bus is not a small change to the plan.
High winds or poor weather can suspend the ropeway. Consult the operator’s current information before travelling and keep a city-based alternative in Aomori.
If you want a stream-side walk on another day, compare the short Oirase walks. Sharing a bus corridor does not automatically make both places fit comfortably into one day.
