Finding a Moma Owl Whistle in Tsuyazaki, Fukuoka

A small clay owl can be the souvenir that gives a walk through Tsuyazaki its purpose. The Moma whistle belongs to the local Tsuyazaki doll-making tradition: a rounded folk toy that is also a whistle.

White-walled buildings and a narrow lane in Tsuyazaki Sengen

Rather than rushing in for a single purchase, make the search part of a walk through Tsuyazaki Sengen. The object makes more sense when you have seen something of the town behind it.

More than an owl ornament

Fukuoka Prefecture’s tourism guide describes Chikuzen Tsuyazaki Ningyo Kobo as a workshop with more than 240 years of history. Makers shape figures using moulds and paint them by hand. The owl-shaped Moma whistle is loved as an auspicious object and for its gentle sound.

Look at the eyes and painted patterns rather than expecting every example to be identical. Ask before trying a display whistle, then choose the expression you would enjoy seeing at home.

Start with a local question at Nagomi

Tsuyazaki Sengen Nagomi has a tourist-information counter and sells souvenirs from Fukutsu and nearby areas. Ask where to find a Moma whistle that day before setting off in search of a particular shop.

Nagomi opens from 9:00am to 5:00pm and closes on the second and fourth Tuesdays. If the workshop is closed on your visit day, ask the information counter about other stockists. Its official site has access information.

Let the search become a town walk

Old houses along the streets are part of Tsuyazaki Sengen’s appeal. A photograph of a whole building and the lane around it gives a different sense of place from the close-up of the owl you take home.

Nagomi also has space to pause. Ask for directions, take a walk and decide what to buy afterwards: there is no need to turn the first interesting object into an immediate purchase.

Pack it as a fragile object

A clay whistle should not travel loose in an outer pocket. Keep its wrapping and surround it with soft clothing. Position any projecting parts where other luggage will not press against them.

Not every souvenir needs a practical job. A small owl on a shelf can simply bring back the memory of the town you walked through.
