Onomichi Without Climbing Every Hill: A Ropeway-and-Walking Half-Day
You can enjoy Onomichi’s hills and sea view without spending the day climbing. Take Senkojiyama Ropeway uphill, enjoy the view and then choose whether to walk down or ride back. The second half need not be fixed before you know how you feel.

Start above the town
- Onomichi Station
- Lower station
About 15 minutes on foot - Ropeway → summit
- Descend by hillside paths or ropeway
- Town streets → waterfront
Roofs, the narrow channel and the opposite shore form the view from the hill. Pause to watch boats as well as take a photograph. Seeing the town from above also helps you understand where you will return.
The lower ropeway station is not directly beside JR Onomichi Station. The city’s guide gives a walk of about fifteen minutes. Include this and any boarding queue in your half-day.

Choose the descent to suit your legs
| Section | Terrain and the alternative |
|---|---|
| Summit → hillside lanes | A route with steps and slopes. If that is difficult, take the ropeway back from the summit station instead. |
| Upper → lower ropeway station | The ropeway provides the return journey; nearby walking routes are not all step-free. |
| Lower station → town and waterfront | Keep the walk to flatter streets. For a wheelchair, ask about the stations and specific destinations’ access before visiting. |
If stairs are comfortable and you want to explore lanes, walk down in short, unhurried sections. Keep residential entrances clear and let local foot traffic pass in narrow spaces.
In wet conditions or if stairs are difficult, a return ropeway ride and a flatter town or waterfront walk may suit you better. This is not a wholly step-free hilltop itinerary; ask about the actual facilities and route for a wheelchair or pushchair.
One-way or return?
Checked on October 3, 2026, the ordinary adult fares are ¥500 one-way and ¥700 return. Basic operating hours are 9am–5:15pm, with event-related changes. A return ticket still gives you a worthwhile view without the stair descent.
A closure to know about in December 2026
Annual inspection and repair work closes the ropeway from December 7 to 25, 2026. During that period, choose a walking ascent or a town-and-waterfront day instead. For other dates, read the operator’s notices when weather affects service.
After returning to town, leave room for food and a waterfront pause. Onomichi does not have to be measured in staircases climbed.
