A Rainy Day in Tokyo: Build a Museum Day Around Ueno
Choose Tokyo National Museum for Japanese art, craft and archaeology, or the National Museum of Nature and Science for natural history and science. Build the day around one museum, with time for lunch and the walk through Ueno Park.

| Compare | Tokyo National Museum | National Museum of Nature and Science |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Japanese art, craft and archaeology. | Nature, living things and science and technology. |
| Walk from JR | About ten minutes from Ueno or Uguisudani. | About five minutes from Ueno’s Park Exit. |
| Closures | Normally Mondays; use the calendar for holidays and special openings. | Normally Mondays, or Tuesday when Monday is a holiday; year-end closure and exhibition-related changes. |
| Luggage | No suitcases anywhere on the grounds. Store yours before arriving. | Large suitcases are prohibited. Store yours before arriving. |
| Tickets | TNM admission and tickets; distinguish special-exhibition tickets. | Kahaku admission and tickets; distinguish permanent and special exhibitions. |
Both routes include outdoor walking. Bring shoes suited to rain and an umbrella you can put away indoors. See the Tokyo National Museum’s access and baggage rules and the science museum’s station approaches.
Do not arrive at Tokyo National Museum with a suitcase expecting to use a locker there. The restriction covers the grounds, not just the galleries, as stated in the museum’s official visitor notice.
Choose exhibits, not a race between two museums
At Tokyo National Museum, paintings, crafts and archaeological objects offer different ways into Japanese culture. Look at the Honkan’s current displays and begin with a subject that interests you. Leave the afternoon open rather than treating every room as a task.
If a special exhibition is the reason for visiting, check how its admission relates to the regular collection before booking. A full day on your feet is not necessarily a better museum visit.

The National Museum of Nature and Science is an alternative for visitors interested in living things, the Earth and scientific exhibits. When travelling together, choose the collection that genuinely interests both of you. Save the second museum for another day.
An indoor destination still involves an outdoor walk
- JR Ueno Station Park Exit
- Kahaku: about five minutes
TNM: continue through the park, about ten minutes - Store your suitcase before walking to the entrance
The journey from Ueno Station to the museum entrance is not entirely covered. Wear shoes suited to wet paths and bring an umbrella you can put away easily indoors. For a large bag, consider station lockers or luggage storage before entering.
Decide whether to eat near the station before your visit or use a museum’s dining facilities. Check its dining and re-entry arrangements rather than assuming you can step outside and return at will.
Check the calendar before leaving
TNM: today’s exhibitions and closure / TNM: tickets / Kahaku: exhibitions, calendar and tickets
Tokyo National Museum normally closes on Mondays, with changes around holidays. Use the calendar for your actual visit date. For the science museum, check the day’s opening information and the exhibits you want to see together.
If the rain eases, finish with a short park walk. If it continues, return to the station for an early meal. A little flexibility makes the museum a day worth planning, not merely somewhere to wait out bad weather.
