Your first Kamikochi walk: Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge
From the pond into the woods, then along the Azusa River: getting off the bus at Taisho Pond and walking via Tashiro Pond and Tashiro Bridge to Kappa Bridge gives you a varied one-way route. It works well for a first visit to Kamikochi. At roughly 1,500 metres, it can be colder than town, so bring warm layers and rain gear.

About 4km from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge
The route via Tashiro Pond and Tashiro Bridge is about 4km. The official estimate is around 80 minutes one way, excluding photography, rests and delays in crowds. Do not allocate every minute before your return bus to walking; leave room to stop along the way.
Allow time for food and photos too. If time or walking conditions are a concern, get off at Kamikochi Bus Terminal and choose a shorter walk around Kappa Bridge.
- Taisho Pond / Taisho-ike (大正池): leave the bus and begin the walk
- Tashiro Pond (田代池) and wetlands: the view opens out from the woodland path
- Tashiro and Hotaka bridges: cross the Azusa River
- Kappa Bridge / Kappa-bashi (河童橋): continue to the bus terminal after your walk
Check path conditions before leaving through Kamikochi’s official PARK Info.
Even drivers finish the journey by bus or taxi
Private cars are restricted in Kamikochi throughout the year. Transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi at Sawando on the Matsumoto side or Akandana parking area on the Takayama side. Routes and operating seasons change; check official access information and the last return service before travelling.
Clothing and essentials
- Familiar shoes with good grip
- Rain gear that leaves your hands free
- Warm layers that are easy to put on and remove
- Water and easy-to-eat snacks
- Sun and insect protection
Boardwalks become slippery after rain or morning dew. Bring rain gear that works in wind rather than relying only on an umbrella.
From Kappa Bridge to the return bus
The official estimate from Kappa Bridge to Kamikochi Bus Terminal is about six minutes on foot. The walk’s endpoint and bus boarding point are different, so locate the terminal route first. Check your bus operator’s current instructions for boarding, reservations and queue tickets, and allow for food and toilet queues.
Once you choose the return service, finish walking early enough for a meal, the walk to the terminal and boarding procedures. If connecting to a train or reaching accommodation with a set dinner time, check that the onward schedule works too.
Storage for large bags
Check storage conditions at your accommodation or a baggage facility before leaving large bags, then carry rain gear, warm layers and drinks in a small bag. Storage may be full. See choosing between lockers and staffed storage.
When the weather deteriorates

If rain intensifies, visibility worsens or you become cold, turn back towards a stop you can reach safely rather than insisting on finishing. With small children or anyone who finds walking difficult, a shorter plan around Kappa Bridge can be more practical. If bus travel is unfamiliar, read how to ride local buses.
