Taking a Large Suitcase on the Shinkansen: Space and Reservation Rules
On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, a suitcase with combined dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires a seat reservation with an oversized-baggage area. Measure it packed, including wheels and handles.

Suitcase size and what to reserve
| Combined dimensions | What to do |
|---|---|
| 160 cm or less | No oversized-baggage reservation required. Check that it fits safely on the rack or at your feet. |
| Over 160 cm, up to 250 cm | Reserve a seat with an oversized-baggage area on applicable routes. |
| Over 250 cm | Cannot be taken aboard. Choose delivery or another option. |
Ordinary personal baggage is limited to two pieces, each within 250 cm in combined dimensions, 2 m in length and 30 kg. Check JR’s guidance for counting rules and exceptions. Sports equipment, musical instruments and strollers may be exempt from oversized-baggage reservations, but using a reserved baggage area still requires the corresponding seat reservation.
Plan storage even for a bag under 160 cm
A bag within 160 cm may still be too heavy to lift onto a rack. Check whether it fits safely at your feet; otherwise consider a seat with baggage space or delivery.
JR Central also describes unreserved vestibule baggage areas for bags up to 160 cm on applicable Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen trains and cars. They are not on every train or car and may fill up. Oversized bags over 160 cm still require a seat reservation.

How to reserve
Choose a seat with an oversized-baggage area at a reserved-seat machine, ticket office or supported online booking service. There is no extra baggage charge, but you must reserve the appropriate seat. The space behind the last row is not available without a reservation.
If full, look for a suitable seat on another train or send the bag. If you miss your train, you cannot assume you can use the next train’s oversized-baggage area. Show staff your reservation and bag size and ask about changing trains. Bringing applicable baggage without a reservation incurs a ¥1,000 fee; this is not a way to guarantee boarding your preferred train.
Other Shinkansen routes have different rules
The oversized-baggage reservation system is not universal. Tohoku, Hokkaido, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen services have different equipment and storage arrangements. Check the operator and train’s official guidance.

Choose not to carry it aboard
During busy periods or journeys with many transfers, hotel-to-hotel delivery can make travel easier. For storage just for the day, check lockers and staffed baggage storage.
