No Coin Locker Available in Japan? Other Ways to Store Large Bags
Every large locker at the station is full, and you have a suitcase to leave. Ask the information desk about another location, then look for staffed storage if necessary. Before handing it over, check the collection deadline so you can still catch your train.
Change the search area when lockers are full
Ask the station information desk about other locker areas or staffed storage. For reservable storage, ecbo cloak lists locations near you or your destination. Check opening hours, availability, bag sizes, prices and cancellation terms before booking. Get the booking confirmed before going there.
At Tokyo Station, JR East Logistics lists staffed baggage counters, including one outside Yaesu South Gate and another inside Gransta Underground North Gate. The official page is in Japanese, but includes location maps. Check which side of the ticket gates you need, the counter’s own collection time and accepted bag size before walking there; availability is separate from the fact that a counter exists.
For an evening train, the storage shop may close first. Set your collection time, then work back to see how much sightseeing time remains.
Record exactly where you left it
Photograph the gate name, exit number, floor and locker number, not just the station. For lockers inside ticket gates, check the conditions for re-entry. With IC-card lockers, the card used to lock it is the key: another card will not open it. Keep the PIN slip or receipt with you, outside the stored bag.
Some lockers add charges when the billing day changes. Follow the posted billing rollover, storage limit and access hours, including building hours. Station opening hours do not always mean the locker is accessible.
Delivery is another option for a large bag
If the next hotel is fixed, sending the bag may be easier than storing it at a station. Check the arrival date and ask the hotel to receive it before arranging delivery. Keep valuables, fragile items, immediately needed medication and next morning’s clothing with you.
