Reserved or Unreserved Shinkansen Seats? Start With Your Departure Time

For a Tokyo-to-Kyoto journey, if your departure time is fixed and two of you have large bags, start by considering reserved seats. Unreserved seats suit a more flexible day when you can also accept the crowds.

Choose reserved seats for a fixed plan

A reservation fixes the train and seat in advance. It helps when two or more people want to sit together, you are travelling with children, the journey is long or you have a booking after arrival. You do not have to wonder whether you will find a seat, or queue early on the platform for an unreserved car.

Unreserved seats leave the time open

On a solo trip, you may not know when sightseeing will end and prefer choosing a train once you reach the station. An unreserved seat can fit that plan. You may have to stand on busy services, so reserve if you want to travel seated. Your train and travel date can also determine whether unreserved seats exist at all.

Nozomi has all-reserved periods

JR Central and JR West announced that Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen Nozomi services will be all-reserved during designated Golden Week, Obon, Silver Week and year-end/New Year periods in fiscal 2026. Cars normally offering unreserved seats become reserved, so an unreserved ticket does not let you occupy a Nozomi seat. Before buying for a holiday period, check JR’s applicable dates. Other train types may still offer unreserved seats.

“All reserved” describes the seats, not a guarantee that nobody can board standing. JR Central’s peak-period guidance allows holders of an unreserved limited-express ticket to stand in Nozomi passageways outside the Green Cars. That does not give you a seat. Hikari and Kodama still have unreserved seating during these periods, but can be crowded; compare their timetable or reserve a seat if sitting matters.

Measure a large suitcase before choosing your seat

On applicable Shinkansen routes, including the Tokaido and Sanyo, oversized baggage with combined dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm generally requires an appropriate seat reservation in advance. Baggage-storage arrangements also include trial operations, so check JR Central’s latest guidance before travelling. Our oversized-baggage guide explains the details.

A morning train with fixed plans after arrival points towards a reservation. A solo journey with an open return time may suit an unreserved seat. In busy periods, first check whether the train has any unreserved seats. Whether fixing the time fits your day is more useful than asking only which option costs less.
