Hiroshima to Matsuyama by Sea: Ferry or High-Speed Boat?

The journey from Hiroshima to Matsuyama can be part of your Setouchi trip rather than a gap between cities. Choose the ferry for time aboard, or the high-speed boat to leave more of the day for Matsuyama. Include the journeys to and from the ports.

Time at sea or time after arrival?

Setonaikai Kisen operates a cruise ferry and a high-speed service on this route.

Service Adult one-way fare and crossing Cars and booking Best fit
Ferry ¥6,000; about 2 hr 40 min Cars can be booked. Foot passengers and two-wheel vehicles board first-come, without reservations. Time aboard is part of the trip.
High-speed boat ¥9,000; normal Hiroshima–Matsuyama sailings about 80–90 min No cars; advance booking recommended. More time after arrival in Matsuyama.

Adult one-way fares, checked October 3, 2026: ferry fares and boarding / high-speed fares and reservations. Add travel between the cities and both ports; discounts and vehicle fares are separate.

With the ferry, leave space after arrival rather than booking a meal you must rush to reach. The faster boat makes more sense when your priority is time in town, but the crossing time alone is not your hotel arrival time.

The ports are not the city-centre stations

  1. Hiroshima Station
  2. Tram or other connection to Hiroshima Port
  3. Hiroshima Port → Matsuyama Kanko Port
  4. Onward transport from the port
  5. Central Matsuyama and accommodation

Use the operator’s port access guide for the connections on both sides.

The terminals are Hiroshima Port and Matsuyama Tourist Port. Add the ground transport on both sides. If using a Hiroshima tram, the Hiroden guide helps with the local part of the journey.

Late sailings need particular care: the operator notes that the final ferry from Matsuyama does not connect with trams after arrival at Hiroshima Port. Read the timetable notes and arrange the onward journey before choosing that departure.

Foot passengers and cars follow different booking rules

The operator’s ferry guidance says foot passengers buy at the counter on the day rather than reserve. It asks for ticket purchase at least 20 minutes before departure; leave additional time to reach the port. Cars have separate reservation arrangements. The high-speed boat does not carry vehicles.

Choose a sailing for the actual date

Dock periods and service changes are announced for 2026, so check the route page for the date you need, including high-speed booking arrangements. Read the operator’s notices before travelling to the terminal when weather disrupts services.

Once you know whether you want the boat journey or the afternoon in town, join the sailing to your route from the arrival port to your accommodation.
