Choosing a Japanese Scent Sachet at Shoyeido in Kyoto

A scent sachet is a way to bring a little fragrance home from Kyoto without burning incense. At Shoyeido’s Kyoto main store, you can choose a fragrance and a small pouch, then have the sachet assembled in the shop. It is an option for someone who does not use an incense burner.

Choose the scent before the pattern

  1. Ask which scent samples are available and choose the fragrance.
  2. Choose an available pouch pattern for that fragrance.
  3. Confirm the total for your chosen combination before it is assembled.

The shop’s selection includes Utsusemi-koh, described as sweet and full; Niu-no-hana, with a more poised character; and Koharu, a fresh, sweet-tart fragrance. Descriptions only go so far, so start with whatever samples are available in the store.

The finished pouches are about 5–6cm long, with plain and Japanese-patterned options. Once you have chosen the scent, think about where the sachet will sit: inside a bag or on a shelf. For a gift, consider whether the recipient enjoys a noticeable fragrance.

The choose-your-fragrance-and-pouch service is listed for the Kyoto main store, Osaka Honmachi and Ginza. It is not a service to assume at every Shoyeido branch.

Ready-made products have separate prices

Current product examples on the official shop page include the September 2026 autumn scented charms at ¥1,045 and the freestanding pumpkin scent bag at ¥2,860. These are separate ready-made products, not the price of the choose-your-scent-and-pouch service. For that service, ask about available scents and patterns, samples for smelling, and the total price of your combination.

A sachet is not an incense stick

The store also sells incense to burn. A sachet holds fragrant material in a bag and releases its scent without a flame. Tell the staff how you intend to use your purchase so you select the right type.

Keep it separately wrapped during the journey if you want to prevent its fragrance transferring to clothing or other souvenirs. Ask about placement and use for the particular sachet you choose.

Visit Kunjyukan before it closes

Kunjyukan, next door to the main store, has displays and spaces for exploring fragrance. Admission is free. Visiting it before shopping can be a pleasant way to become familiar with the world of incense.

The store opens from 9:00am to 6:00pm, except during its New Year closure. Kunjyukan opens from 10:00am to 5:00pm and has irregular closing days. The two spaces have different hours and closures, so plan around Kunjyukan if you want to see both.

The current subway approach

  1. Karasuma Oike Station, exit 1
  2. North along Karasuma-dori
About five minutes to the shop
  3. Shoyeido Kyoto main shop and Kunjyukan

From Marutamachi, use exit 6; the shop advises that exit 7 is closed. Open the official access map.

The store is on the east side of Karasuma-dori, just north of Nijo in Nakagyo Ward. It is about five minutes on foot from Exit 1 of Karasuma Oike Station. For Marutamachi Station, the official shop page currently directs visitors to Exit 6 while Exit 7 is closed.

A pattern is easy to choose from a picture; a fragrance is a reason to visit in person. Leave enough time to find a combination you like rather than treating the purchase as the last errand of the day.
