Hakone Onsen Manju: One to Eat Now or a Box to Take Home?

In Hakone-Yumoto, trying a single manju before choosing a gift box is part of the fun. The name covers different textures: steamed skins or baked batter, white bean filling or azuki. Choose the one you will eat now separately from the box you will give someone days later.

Baked or steamed?

Hakone Navi’s 2026 feature describes Kikukawa Shoten’s Hakone Manju as white bean filling inside a castella-style baked exterior. If you pictured a steamed bun, the different texture makes it an interesting first taste.

The same feature presents Marushima Honten’s white and brown steamed manju. Instead of deciding which is the “proper” onsen bun, compare the baked exterior with a soft steamed skin and choose the style you enjoy.

For one bun, think about where to eat it

Where individual sales are offered, you can try one before committing to a large box. Use the eating space indicated by the shop, avoid blocking a busy pavement, and have somewhere to keep the wrapper until you can dispose of it.

For the train, pack the bun where it is easy to reach alongside a drink. If a ryokan dinner is coming soon, buying fewer keeps the snack from replacing the meal you have booked.

For a gift box, work back from the day it will be eaten

Think about when you or the recipient will eat the sweets before choosing box size. Best-before dates, storage and individual wrapping differ by product. With several days left before flying home, read that particular product’s label at the counter before buying.

Soft buns should not go at the bottom of a tightly packed bag. Protect the box, and in summer avoid leaving it in direct sun or a hot car. Consider the room available in your suitcase before adding more boxes.

For an international journey, keep the ingredient label and check the destination’s food-import conditions. Another approach is a few sweets to enjoy locally and one lasting gift, such as Hakone yosegi woodwork. The two purchases do not have to serve the same purpose.
