Oirase Gorge without the full hike: two short walks and a bus back
You do not have to hike the length of Oirase Gorge to enjoy it. A half-day visit can centre on Ishigedo to Kumoi Falls, or a shorter walk between Nenokuchi and Choshi Falls. Both leave room to stop beside the water rather than concentrating on the distance still ahead.

Choose a return bus before choosing how far to walk. Services are not frequent enough to assume you can finish anywhere and immediately catch a ride back.
Ishigedo to Kumoi Falls: stream scenery with a waterfall finish
The Ministry of the Environment’s route gives this section as about 2.8km and 60 minutes of walking one way. Returning on foot doubles that walking time. For a one-way walk with photographs and pauses, allow roughly 1½–2 hours as a planning estimate, with meals and bus waiting added separately.
Use the toilet and look at local trail information at Ishigedo Rest House before setting off. Rather than extending the distance, leave time to watch a stretch of water that catches your eye.
Decide in advance whether you will board a bus at Kumoi Falls or walk back to Ishigedo. A bus towards Aomori travels in the opposite direction from one towards Lake Towada: the stop name alone is not enough.

Nenokuchi to Choshi Falls: a shorter option from the lake
The lake-side section is about 1.5km, with an official walking estimate of 30 minutes each way. An out-and-back therefore takes about an hour on foot before photographs and rests. It fits a shorter day or a visit combined with the lake.
A short distance is not necessarily a smooth city pavement. Wear shoes with grip for wet surfaces and uneven ground. Turn back rather than extending the route if the weather or path conditions do not suit your group.
Find the correct station-bound bus
The JR Bus Tohoku timetable includes different services in one document. Separate those returning to Aomori or Shin-Aomori from those going to Hachinohe, then read the operating-date column for your chosen service.
Under the September 18, 2026 timetable, Oirase services departing Hachinohe Station require a reservation; boarding at intermediate stops uses available seats. Autumn Mizuumi services are unreserved. Do not apply the separate winter Hakkoda reservation instructions to an October journey.
- Outbound: your alighting stop and arrival time.
- Return: the boarding stop, destination station and operating dates.
- Walk: one way or return, plus time for photographs and rest.
- Train connection: leave room beyond the bus’s scheduled arrival.
Cash and transport IC cards are accepted on these services; prepare the card balance before boarding. The local-bus guide explains the basic boarding and payment routine.
Let the return journey set the pace
A day from Aomori includes substantial bus travel as well as the walk. One short section and a relaxed lunch can make a better day than adding distance until the return becomes rushed.
The special shuttle linked to Oirase’s 2026 private-car restrictions was announced for September 7–13. Plan October travel with the regular timetable and current Towada notices, not that temporary shuttle.
If you also want to visit Tsutanuma, read the separate sunrise booking and daytime-walk guide before combining them. A short Oirase walk and a pre-dawn visit to Tsutanuma need quite different transport planning.
