A shorter Shimanami ride: choose your island, bike and way home

You do not have to ride from Onomichi to Imabari to enjoy Shimanami Kaido. With half a day, choose one island to explore or one bridge to cross. That leaves room for lunch and the view, rather than turning every stop into lost time.

The full route is roughly 70km. A one-way outing needs two plans: where your bicycle finishes, and how you leave that place afterwards.

A short option: Tatara Shimanami Park to Sunset Beach

JB Honshi’s beginner Tatara Bridge course runs from Tatara Shimanami Park on Omishima, across the bridge to Setoda Sunset Beach on Ikuchijima: about 5 km one way. Returning by the same route gives roughly 10 km, calculated from that distance. Add time for the bridge approach, stops and rental handling, and fit the ride to your bike’s return conditions and the terminal’s hours. Course distance checked October 14, 2026.

Start partway along the route

One option is to take a boat from Onomichi to Setoda, rent on Ikuchijima and make a local outing. Combine the waterfront with the Shiomachi shopping street, then return to the same rental base. There is no need to complete an island circuit just because it appears on a map.

For a bridge crossing, Honshu–Shikoku Bridge Expressway’s beginner Tatara Bridge course suggests riding from Tatara Shimanami Park on Omishima towards Setoda Sunset Beach on Ikuchijima and back. Budget for the approach slopes in both directions.

Count the boat, rental paperwork, lunch and return procedure as part of your half-day—not just the time in the saddle. Choose a turnaround time from your journey home, then use any spare time for stops.

Choose the return rules, not just the bike

These rules are for Shimanami Japan’s public rental network, not every private rental shop or Onomichi’s separate community-cycle scheme. The current rental page distinguishes:

  • Cross bikes and city bikes: ¥3,000 per adult per day; return at any network terminal, with multi-day rentals available.
  • Electric-assist bikes: ¥4,000 per adult per day; selected pickup bases, but returns across the network.
  • E-bikes: ¥8,000 per adult per day; selected pickup bases and return within opening hours the same day.
  • Tandems: ¥4,000 per day; return to the original rental base that day.

Older maps still say electric-assist bikes cannot be returned elsewhere. Use the current conditions for the specific bike and terminal you book. Returning earlier than arranged does not earn a partial refund, so a short outing still needs a day-rate budget.

A bike-return terminal is not your transport home

Island bases including Setoda Tourist Information Center, Sunset Beach and Omishima currently list 9:00–17:00 hours. Onomichi Station’s base lists 8:00–19:00 from March to November. Do not borrow Onomichi’s later closing time for an island return. The terminal directory also identifies nearby ports and bus stops.

If finishing on Omishima, decide whether your onward connection uses Omishima BS or Inokuchi Port. A highway bus stop is not the harbour. Include the walk from the return office, and find a workable onward service before committing to a one-way ride.

For Setoda–Onomichi, use Setouchi Cruising’s current PDF and operating calendar; the page also retains older schedules. Decide whether to return the bike before boarding or bring it aboard. The listed adult one-way fare is ¥1,500, with a separate ¥500 charge for a bicycle or electric bicycle.

Leave yourself an earlier finish

If weather or fatigue changes the outing, contact your rental provider about a suitable return terminal and onward transport. Do not ride on the assumption that an ordinary bus will take an assembled bicycle; return it first or use an appropriate boat service.

The rental network lends helmets free. Keep left, slow down on bridge descents and finish in daylight: the operator prohibits night riding. Leave large bags in luggage storage. A shorter ride with time to stop by the sea is a complete outing in its own right.
