Walking Magome to Tsumago in autumn: the slope, your bags and the bus back

The old road between Magome and Tsumago is more than a stroll along two historic streets. For an autumn walk over the pass, arrange your morning luggage drop-off and your onward bus before adding lunch or browsing stops.

Tsumago’s official guide gives roughly 2½–3 hours for the inter-village walk. Allow more for the villages themselves. The photographs here show their streets in December, not current autumn foliage.

Which direction suits your legs?

The official route description distinguishes a short, steeper climb from Magome to the pass and a longer, gentler slope between Tsumago and the pass. Starting in Magome puts the longer descent after the summit; reversing the route means a longer climb.

Downhill is not automatically easier on knees. Stone paving can be slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip and carry drinking water, rain protection and a warm layer in a small backpack. This is not a route for pulling a suitcase.

Use the official walking guide to understand the route. Make time for the wooden buildings and streets as well as the trees, so the day does not depend entirely on the leaves reaching a particular colour.

Drop bags before 11:30

The regular 2026 luggage service runs March 20–November 30. Drop-off is 8:30–11:30, collection 13:00–17:00, and the fee is ¥1,000 per item. Listed locations include Magome Tourist Information Center, Magome-juku BASE, Tsumago Tourist Information Center and the inns in Otsumago.

Confirm the collection location when leaving your bags, then plan to reach it before your bus. Arriving after 11:30 does not leave the same regular service available: ask about the separate on-demand arrangement, or use luggage storage elsewhere and rethink the route.

The on-demand service is listed within 8:30–17:00 hours at ¥4,500 for up to three items, plus ¥1,000 for each additional item. Read the 2026 service notice and contact the actual drop-off location. Keep valuables and everything needed on the trail with you.

Build the return around Nagiso Station

If finishing in Tsumago, choose the bus to Nagiso Station together with your onward train. The official access page links the regional bus timetable. Work backwards from a bus before the final departure rather than spending every available minute on the trail.

There is also a walking route from Tsumago towards Nagiso, but it is an additional walk after the pass, not a station just around the corner. Leave time to ask the information centre about alternatives, including a taxi, if you finish tired.

For 2026, the reservation-only Nagoya–Magome–Tsumago highway bus has a published operating period of October 17–November 29. It has not started as of this October 13 check. Confirm your date and stop and book separately from the local bus.

A shorter day is still worth having

If you arrive late or the paths are wet, connect the villages by bus and concentrate on their streets. The official guide also suggests a shorter downhill walk from the pass towards Tsumago, but first establish that transport to the pass works on your date.

Ask the tourist information centre about current trail and bear notices; bear-bell rental is available. Finish with enough daylight to enjoy Tsumago, collect your bag and reach the bus without rushing.
