Planning a Hakone Budget: Transport, Meals and Overnight Costs
Divide your Hakone budget into travel from Tokyo, transport within Hakone, food and admissions, and accommodation. Hotel prices depend heavily on dates and meal plans. Add the rate you can actually book, rather than trying to match an assumed average.

Choose the route before the transport ticket
An adult two-day Hakone Freepass costs ¥7,100 from Shinjuku or ¥6,000 from Odawara. The Shinjuku version includes the Odakyu return journey, but the Romancecar supplement is separate. Arriving by Shinkansen means adding that journey to an Odawara-area pass.
A ¥2,000 one-way ropeway journey plus the ¥1,700 pirate-ship journey between Togendai and the southern ports totals ¥3,700. Add the railway and bus journeys you will actually take before comparing with a pass. A visit consisting mainly of travelling to a ryokan does not need a budget for rides you will never use.
A clear day-trip calculation
For example, a Shinjuku two-day Freepass at ¥7,100 plus an adult Open-Air Museum web ticket at ¥1,800 totals ¥8,900 for those two purchases. This is a calculation example, not an all-inclusive budget: lunch, drinks, Romancecar supplements and other stops are extra. For a museum-focused day, compare ordinary transport fares too.
Onshi-Hakone Park offers scenery without an admission fee. Combining a free walk with one paid attraction can work better than collecting several admissions. Transport to the lake still belongs in the total.
| Item | Amount in this example |
|---|---|
| Adult two-day Freepass from Shinjuku | ¥7,100 |
| Open-Air Museum adult web ticket | ¥1,800 |
| Total for the two items above | ¥8,900 |
| Food, drinks, limited-express supplement and lodging | Not included; add the choices you actually make |

For an overnight stay, compare the meals as well as the room
A dinner-and-breakfast plan includes those meals. To compare it fairly with room-only accommodation, add eating out and getting to the restaurant. A night-time taxi can narrow the difference between two room prices.
Check whether the booking screen quotes per person or per room, how taxes and service charges are handled, and what is paid on arrival. A per-person price based on two guests is not a solo rate. Compare the same date, guest count and cancellation terms.
Cut unnecessary detours before cutting useful comfort
- Avoid returning to the same port or station just to retrieve luggage.
- Choose one paid museum and combine it with a free walk.
- Compare official advance and walk-up tickets without assuming discounts stack.
- Decide how many people you are buying souvenirs for before shopping.
Do not remove a necessary ride when your legs are tired, or the time needed to arrive for dinner, just to trim the total. Read the Freepass comparison and room-only dinner guide, then add only the items your own trip needs.
