Is the Hakone Freepass Worth It? Day Trips and Overnight Stays
The Hakone Freepass suits a trip that links the mountain train, cable car, ropeway and pirate ship. If you are simply heading to a ryokan in Hakone-Yumoto, soaking in its baths and going home the next morning, ordinary tickets may cost less.

Choose your route before choosing your pass. There is little pleasure in cutting short lunch, a museum visit or a soak just to squeeze in enough rides to break even.
Start with Shinjuku or Odawara
These are the current adult prices. Both passes cover consecutive days.
| Starting station | 2 days | 3 days |
|---|---|---|
| Shinjuku | ¥7,100 | ¥7,500 |
| Odawara | ¥6,000 | ¥6,400 |
The Shinjuku version includes one return journey on the Odakyu Line between the starting station and Odawara. The Romancecar limited-express supplement is separate: the pass alone does not give you a reserved seat on that train.
If you are arriving at Odawara from Tokyo Station by JR or Shinkansen, compare the Odawara version instead. Your Tokyo–Odawara journey is an additional cost. The ¥1,100 difference between the two passes does not, by itself, tell you which whole trip is cheaper.
If the route is still undecided, consider leaving your luggage and starting from the Lake Ashi side, then list the journeys you would actually make.
Add up the journeys you will actually make
One complete loop from Hakone-Yumoto: ¥5,800
For one adult making each journey once, without returning along the ropeway or boat section:
- Hakone-Yumoto → Gora, mountain train: ¥460.
- Gora → Sounzan, cable car: ¥430.
- Sounzan → Togendai via Owakudani, ropeway one-way ticket: ¥2,000.
- Togendai → Moto-Hakone, pirate ship ordinary cabin: ¥1,700.
- Moto-Hakone → Hakone-Yumoto, Hakone Tozan Bus H route: ¥1,210.
Total: ¥5,800, or ¥200 below the ¥6,000 two-day Odawara Freepass. This example begins and ends at Hakone-Yumoto; travel between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto is not included in the total. Add any journeys before or after this loop, including the following day, before choosing. No unneeded return rides or special-cabin upgrades are counted. Fares checked October 14, 2026 using the railway fare table, ropeway and ship fares, and official route search for the H bus.
A standard adult one-way ropeway ticket costs ¥2,000. The pirate ship between Togendai and Hakonemachi-ko or Moto-Hakone costs ¥1,700 one way. Together, those two rides total ¥3,700, leaving a ¥2,300 gap to the two-day Odawara pass. Add the mountain train, cable car and eligible bus journeys you intend to take.
The ropeway return fare is ¥3,000, as is the pirate ship return fare. Taking both return journeys would therefore total ¥6,000. A loop often does not retrace those sections, though, so do not count a return ride that is not in your itinerary.

On the route from Hakone-Yumoto through Gora, Sounzan and Owakudani to Togendai, time seated on the train is part of the day, too. Think about whether that much moving around fits your pace, rather than treating the trip only as a fare calculation.
What is covered—and what costs extra
Unlimited travel covers the Hakone Tozan Railway, Hakone Tozan Cable Car, Hakone Ropeway and Hakone Sightseeing Cruise pirate ships, plus designated sections of Hakone Tozan Bus, Odakyu Highway Bus and Tokai Bus, and the sightseeing-facilities bus.
- Izuhakone Bus is not covered. Two buses can have the same destination but different operators and ticket rules.
- On Lake Ashi, the included boats are the pirate ships. Hakone Yuransen is a separate operator.
- Benefits at roughly 70 facilities generally mean discounts, not free admission everywhere.
- Budget separately for extras such as the Romancecar supplement and the pirate ship’s special cabin.
For costs beyond transport, use the day-trip and overnight Hakone budget guide. It helps you decide whether to spend on more rides, a meal or your accommodation.
Buying a two-day pass for a day trip
There is no one-day Freepass, so even a day trip means comparing individual tickets with the two-day price. Shopping and a day-use bath in Hakone-Yumoto involve relatively little transport. For Owakudani and Lake Ashi, add the individual fares using the official fare search.
On an overnight trip, include the following day’s covered journeys. For two nights and three days, the adult three-day pass costs ¥400 more than the two-day version; the last day’s travel will help settle the choice.
For a digital pass, open it before setting off and learn how to activate and display it. That is easier at the station than halfway up the mountain. Planning your Lake Ashi ports and boat journeys in advance can also save an unnecessary return ride.
