Hakone Wetlands Garden: A Quiet Hour in Sengokuhara

Between Hakone’s many connections, the Wetlands Garden in Sengokuhara offers an hour spent looking at plants rather than boarding another ride. Boardwalks cross the wetlands, with small flowers and water to linger over. Bring comfortable shoes and time to stop, rather than mountain-climbing equipment.

The official estimate is around 40 minutes for the garden, or about an hour including the exhibition room. Allow longer if you like photographing flowers. If the next bus leaves in half an hour, save the garden for another Sengokuhara outing rather than rushing through it.

Look beyond the showiest flowers to the changing plants around marshes, ponds and woodland. Slowing down makes the small blooms beside the boardwalk easier to spot.

The 2026 season ends on November 30

The 2026 opening period is March 14–November 30, with no regular closure days during the season. Hours are 9am to 5pm, and last admission is at 4:30pm. For a winter Hakone trip, check the closed season before putting the garden into the plan.

Last admission does not leave a full hour inside

Entering at 4:30pm leaves only half an hour before the 5pm closing time. For the unhurried garden-and-exhibition visit described above, arrive earlier and include the walk from the bus stop. If your bus reaches Sengokuhara too late, choose another outing rather than planning to finish the garden after closing.

Admission is ¥700 for adults and ¥400 for primary-school children. The Hakone Freepass lists a ¥100 discount. The official flower updates are a better guide to what may be blooming on your dates than a photograph taken in another season.

From Yumoto, get off at Sengoku Annaisho-mae

The entrance to Hakone Wetlands Garden

The official access guide describes the T-route bus from Hakone-Yumoto towards Togendai: about 30 minutes to Sengoku Annaisho-mae, then an approximately eight-minute walk. Traffic affects the bus journey, so do not simply add those estimates to an hour in the garden and make the next appointment tight.

There is also free parking. If arriving by bus, note the return stop and direction when you get there, before turning your attention to the garden.

A small outing from a Sengokuhara stay

Follow the garden with a museum, or return to your accommodation for a bath. Keeping the day’s stops within Sengokuhara leaves more room to linger than pushing straight on to Lake Ashi.

Take care on wet boardwalks and stay on the paths when looking at flowers. Bring home photographs rather than plants. If you are still choosing a base, compare Sengokuhara with Hakone’s other accommodation areas.
