TORIITravel in Japan

Privacy and data use

Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information TORII may receive, why it may be processed and the choices available to visitors.

About this site

TORII is an independent bilingual editorial website about Japan. This policy applies to the English edition at torii-jp.com and the Japanese edition under /ja/. TORII does not currently operate user accounts, a public contact form, comments, email subscriptions, online payments or an e-commerce checkout.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, the hosting environment may create server logs when a page is requested. These records can include an IP address, date and time, requested URL, browser or device information, referring page and technical error details. They may be used for security, abuse prevention, fault diagnosis and aggregate service operation.

TORII does not use server logs to build personal travel profiles. Log retention and infrastructure-level processing may also be governed by the hosting provider’s operational and security practices.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies and similar identifiers may be used to remember settings, maintain sessions and measure use. TORII does not currently operate a visitor account, shopping cart or newsletter. WordPress, the hosting environment, embedded services and Google Analytics may nevertheless use technical identifiers as described below.

You can restrict or delete cookies in your browser. Blocking some technologies may affect embedded media or other site functions.

Analytics

TORII uses Google Analytics 4, connected through the Site Kit by Google WordPress plugin, to understand how visitors find and use the site. Google Analytics may process page views, interaction events, approximate location derived from an IP address, device and browser characteristics, referral information and similar technical data. TORII uses aggregated reports to improve navigation, article usefulness and site performance.

Google processes this information under its own terms and privacy practices. Learn more in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy.

Site Kit is configured not to count logged-in WordPress users. Google Consent Mode is enabled. For visitors in regions where consent is required, Analytics storage and measurement are denied by default unless a compatible consent mechanism communicates the visitor’s choice.

Advertising and Google advertising cookies

TORII does not currently display paid advertising. If Google AdSense or another advertising service is introduced, third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables Google and its partners to serve ads based on visits to TORII and/or other sites on the internet.

Users can manage personalized advertising through Google Ads Settings. Information about how Google uses data from partner sites is available at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

Where applicable law requires consent for advertising or measurement technologies, TORII will use an appropriate consent mechanism. Declining analytics or advertising cookies does not prevent access to ordinary editorial pages.

Embedded content

Articles may embed or link to maps, video, social media, booking providers, museums, transport operators or other third-party services. An embedded service may receive technical information as though the visitor had accessed that provider directly. Its own privacy policy governs that processing.

External and affiliate links

Following an external link transfers the visitor to another organization. TORII is not responsible for that organization’s privacy or security practices. If affiliate links are introduced, they may include a tracking parameter used to attribute a qualifying purchase or booking. Such relationships will be disclosed according to our Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure.

Information submitted directly

If a contact channel, correction form, newsletter or account function is introduced later, TORII will explain what information is required, the purpose of collection and any relevant retention or sharing before the visitor submits it. Please do not send passwords, payment details, passport information or other highly sensitive data through an ordinary inquiry channel.

Retention and security

Information should be retained only as long as needed for the stated purpose, security, legal obligations or dispute handling. Reasonable technical and organizational precautions may reduce risk, but no internet transmission or storage system can be guaranteed completely secure.

Children

TORII is a general-audience travel and culture publication and is not designed to collect personal information from children. If interactive services are added, age-appropriate safeguards will be considered before launch.

Your choices and questions

  • Use browser settings to delete or restrict cookies.
  • Use the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on where supported.
  • Use Google Ads Settings to manage personalized advertising if Google advertising is activated.
  • Avoid submitting personal information through a channel that does not clearly explain its purpose.
  • Review the privacy policy of a third-party provider before booking, purchasing or creating an account.

Current privacy and correction information is maintained through the Contact page. A public inquiry channel will be identified there before personal information is intentionally collected.

Policy changes

This policy may be revised when TORII changes its analytics use or introduces advertising, affiliate tracking, contact tools, commerce or other data-processing functions. The effective date below will change when the substance of the policy changes.
