A typhoon during your Japan trip: what to do before transport stops

If a typhoon may overlap with your trip, check your railway or airline’s service updates as well as the forecast track. Discuss changing your travel date or extending your stay before the wind and rain intensify. Do not base your plans solely on a forecast from several days earlier; watch for evacuation information from the municipality where you are staying.

Check typhoon warnings, evacuation notices and transport updates

  • Japan Meteorological Agency: check the typhoon track, warnings and the Kikikuru risk map for your location.
  • Local municipality: check evacuation notices and designated shelters. Ask your accommodation about the local area and safe action to take.
  • Your transport operator: match the route, flight number and date to planned suspensions, cancellations and expected resumption updates.

Weather, evacuation and transport information each need attention. A train running does not mean the surrounding area is safe; risk can rise before a municipality issues evacuation information. Put safety ahead of sightseeing and act on local authority and facility guidance, taking account of conditions around you.

Save the Kikikuru guide and Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen service updates. Even if the Shinkansen is running, check connecting local trains and buses separately.

Before cancellations: arrange your hotel and contact booking providers

Before dangerous weather arrives, consider changing your travel day, staying another night or reducing your itinerary. Secure somewhere safe to stay rather than trying to find an alternative route after damage has occurred.

  1. Ask your current accommodation whether you can safely extend your stay.
  2. Check the official change and refund conditions for your transport booking, and save the reservation number and suspension notice.
  3. Tell your next accommodation or activity provider that you may not arrive, and explain the change you would like to make.

Free cancellation and refunds depend on the company, ticket and booking channel. An airline cancellation does not automatically make a separately booked hotel refundable.

Water, medication and charging while staying at your accommodation

  • Obtain drinking water, food and regular medication early.
  • Charge your phone and power bank.
  • Keep your passport and cash in a waterproof bag.
  • Stay away from rivers, coastlines, mountain paths and underground spaces.

Ask your accommodation about storing large bags. Courier collections may also stop, so luggage delivery may be unavailable.
