A Nikko autumn day trip: Lake Chuzenji or the town, not everything

Lake colours, waterfalls and Toshogu all look close enough on a map. Autumn traffic makes that a much bigger day than it appears. For a day trip, choose either the Lake Chuzenji area or Nikko’s town and temples as your main focus. You will spend more time looking at the place and less time watching the road.

For a lake day, start with Chuzenji and Kegon Falls

If you can reach Nikko early and have room before your train home, head towards Lake Chuzenji first. A lakeside walk, Kegon Falls and lunch make a sensible starting plan. When bus queues grow, staying in one area is more rewarding than adding another destination.

Tobu Bus warns of substantial delays during the foliage season. Do not simply add a few minutes to the normal journey time and assume you will catch a booked train. If the outward ride is already slow, shorten the plan beyond the lake and leave more of the afternoon for getting down.

Bus boarding points at Chuzenji Onsen changed on September 24, 2026 because of terminal works. The arrangements differ for Nikko-bound, Yumoto-bound and Hangetsuyama services. Use the current boarding-point notice and signs on site rather than platform numbers in older photographs.

Add Ryuzu Falls only when the return still works

Ryuzu offers a different view: moving water framed by autumn trees rather than an open lake. It also adds another transfer to your day. If you reach Chuzenji much later than planned, turn back from the lake instead. Save a longer Senjogahara walk for a separate visit rather than stacking it on top of both waterfalls.

Arriving later? Stay with the town and temples

A day between the station area and the shrines and temples leaves room for sightseeing, food and a walk through town without the long round trip up Irohazaka. Central Nikko gets busy too, so choose walking or a bus according to the distance and your energy rather than assuming a short bus ride will always be quick.

If Toshogu is the reason you came, give it the time it deserves. Use each attraction’s own official information for admission, last entry and ticket options; the temple and shrine area does not operate as one site with one set of opening hours.

Work backwards from your train home

A reserved limited express gives you a fixed departure, not a guaranteed connection from a delayed bus. Before adding one last stop at the lake, open Tobu’s Nikko bus information and reassess the trip back towards the stations.

  • Before leaving: put your return train, the day’s bus timetable, foliage reports and weather together.
  • At Chuzenji: decide whether there is still room for Ryuzu or whether to stay by the lake.
  • When downhill services are delayed: start the return rather than adding another attraction.

Our Nikko pass guide explains the different coverage areas. A pass covering a wide area does not make every stop a sensible part of one day. If you choose the lake, leave time simply to enjoy being beside it.
