Which NIKKO PASS do you need? World Heritage Area vs All Area

Choose your NIKKO PASS around one question: are you staying around the shrines, or travelling up to Lake Chuzenji and Okunikko? The World Heritage Area pass covers a compact two-day trip; the All Area pass lasts four days and reaches the lake and mountains.

These passes are sold for foreign travellers. Japanese companions travelling with foreign visitors are also eligible, but they are not a general-purpose pass for Japanese-only trips.

Two passes, two different itineraries

Pass Validity and adult price Best fit
World Heritage Area 2 days; ¥3,000 Buses around Shinkyo and the central shrine district
All Area 4 days; ¥8,000 The central sights plus Lake Chuzenji and Okunikko

The listed child prices are ¥1,500 and ¥4,000 respectively, checked October 9, 2026. Both include one return journey between Asakusa and Shimo-Imaichi, plus unlimited travel within the specified Tobu rail area linking Shimo-Imaichi, Tobu-Nikko and Shin-Fujiwara. Neither is a pass for the wider JR network.

The World Heritage Area bus zone centres on the shrines. Do not buy it expecting it to cover the ride to Lake Chuzenji. All Area has broader Tobu Bus Nikko coverage and includes the seasonal Lake Chuzenji cruise and low-emission bus. The published season for those two services is mid-April–November 30; check their operating status for your visit as well.

A limited express seat costs extra

If you want to take a limited express from Asakusa, buy the separate limited express ticket for your train. Having a pass does not reserve a seat. Pick your outward and return trains first, then work out how much time you have in Nikko.

Admission to Toshogu and other shrines and temples is also separate. A discount listed for an attraction is not free entry, so keep transport, limited express charges and admission as separate parts of your budget.

There is another reason to read the current notices rather than just the list of discounts: the official All Area page lists the Akechidaira Ropeway as suspended from January 16, 2026 to August 31, 2027. Do not include it as an operating attraction in an autumn 2026 itinerary.

Will you actually use the Asakusa return journey?

The included Asakusa–Shimo-Imaichi round trip matters when comparing value. If you arrive in Nikko by JR or continue to another region instead of returning to Asakusa, you may not use that part of the pass. More days of validity do not automatically make a pass the cheaper choice.

Digital tickets are available through Tobu’s official ticket site. If buying a paper product or an online exchange voucher, follow that product’s instructions for collection at the Asakusa tourist information centre. An exchange voucher is not necessarily a ticket you can board with immediately.

In autumn, leave room for the bus back

A pass covering Lake Chuzenji does not bypass road traffic. During the foliage season, separate your time at the lake from the time needed to return to Tobu-Nikko Station for your train.

Trying to cover the shrine district and Okunikko in one day can make the return journey dominate the afternoon. Choose a main area around your accommodation and train times instead. If Japanese buses are unfamiliar, our local bus guide explains boarding and payment before you set off.
