Tateyama in October: choose your autumn stop by altitude, not just the date

October foliage on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is not confined to Murodo. Colour moves down the mountains, so the highest stop may already be past its autumn peak while lower slopes are still changing. Choose the altitude that suits your travel date, then leave time to get off and walk.

Follow autumn downhill

The route’s usual seasonal guide places Murodo’s autumn colour from around mid-September, Midagahara and Kurobedaira in early October, Kurobe Dam and Ogizawa around mid-October, and Bijodaira later in the month. Use that progression to narrow your options, then consult the official autumn guide and dated local reports.

A Tateyama Nature Conservation Center report dated October 6, 2026 described autumn ground cover around Murodo alongside trees already losing leaves. It illustrates why a single peak-colour date cannot describe the whole route.

Murodo suits a day centred on alpine scenery; Midagahara offers a wetland stop; Kurobe Dam can fit a visit from the Nagano side. Pick the experience you most want rather than treating every stop as compulsory.

At Midagahara, book the next bus before walking

Midagahara sits at 1,930m on the Tateyama Highland Bus route. If you get off here, reserve a seat on your next bus at Midagahara Station immediately after arrival. The equivalent booking point at Tengudaira is Tengudaira Sanso.

Once you know your onward departure, choose a walk that leaves time to return to the stop. A full bus may mean your preferred departure is unavailable; do not leave that decision until after exploring.

Wetland pools and changing ground cover reward a slower pace without a long hike. Stay on the boardwalk and take care when it is wet. If you are crossing the route with a suitcase, read the Alpine Route luggage-forwarding guide before deciding what to carry.

A through-trip needs fewer long stops

Travelling from Toyama to Nagano involves several different services, not one continuous bus ride. Choose one main walking stop and enjoy other scenery from the vehicles or during transfers. Returning to the same side simplifies the route, but still requires time for queues and connections.

Match your ticket’s travel section to your planned stop and onward bus. Leave space before any train or bus booked after the Alpine Route. Current ticket notices are linked from the official website.

Late October adds a snow decision

The operator places Murodo’s first snowfall around late October in a typical year. Snow and frozen roads can affect the Highland Bus. Pack a windproof layer, warm clothing you can add while standing still, and shoes with grip; check the walking surface locally before setting out.

If conditions deteriorate, shorten the walk and concentrate on the journey back. If the best colour has moved downhill, spend time there instead. An autumn visit does not have to reach the highest possible stop to be worthwhile.
