Hatsuhana Soba in Hakone-Yumoto: Lunch, Queues and Luggage
Decide whether lunch in Hakone-Yumoto is a reason to stop or simply a meal before heading into the mountains. If a particular restaurant is part of the trip, waiting can be worthwhile. If you have a cruise or museum ahead, set a waiting limit before joining the queue.

For soba, look towards Hatsuhana by the river
Hatsuhana is about a five-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station beside the Haya River. Its main restaurant stands near Yumoto Bridge, with an annex a little farther along the river. The official site says they serve the same menu. The main building’s large roof is also a useful landmark as you leave the shopping street for the water.
Japanese yam is a feature of its soba, but the noodles are not simply buckwheat. The restaurant lists egg among the ingredients. Check the food information if you have an allergy or need a vegan meal. For a day centred on yam soba, the food itself can be the reason to take this detour.

If you wait, remove a later transfer
Queue time depends on the day’s customers and available tables. If lunch takes priority, limiting the afternoon to one stop leaves room to enjoy the meal without rushing afterwards. If a boat departure or admission cutoff is approaching, travelling first and eating at your destination may fit better.
Establish that lunch is available there before leaving Yumoto. The choice of restaurants around a station does not necessarily follow you to the next bus stop in the mountains.
Store the suitcase before sitting down
Leaving luggage at your hotel or station is easier than bringing it through narrow aisles or steps. For hotel delivery, the Carry Service accepts bags until noon. Eating first and returning to the counter afterwards may miss that deadline.
On the return day, buying souvenirs after lunch also keeps your hands freer during the meal. Decide whether lunch is the day’s main event or a pause before the next view; that makes the decision much easier when you see the queue.
