One autumn night in Kamikochi: make room for the morning
An overnight stay in Kamikochi need not mean doubling your walking distance. It can mean unpacking once and stepping out beside the river with a small bag the next morning. Choose the accommodation around that morning, and leave the arrival day less crowded.

This is about staying inside Kamikochi. A night in Matsumoto or Hirayu followed by a morning bus is a different arrangement. The existing walking guide covers routes; here, the focus is arrival, bags, breakfast and departure.
Leave the afternoon for reaching your accommodation
Find the property on the official park map before booking. Kappa Bridge, the Tashiro Bridge area, Myojin and Tokusawa involve different onward walks from the bus terminal. Do not assume the room is beside the bus stop.
Start with a modest sequence: bus, luggage arrangements, a short walk, then the accommodation. Establish dinner time and the latest accepted arrival first. If the bus runs late, move the walk to tomorrow.
For example, the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel’s FAQ asks guests to arrive before 18:00. That is this hotel’s instruction, not a universal deadline. Use the conditions of your own booking.

Match luggage delivery to the arrival bus
The 2026 Kamikochi Baggage Delivery Service is for guests staying at participating accommodation inside Kamikochi—not day visitors or guests staying outside the park. Terminal-to-property delivery costs ¥1,000 per bag. The announced season runs April 25–November 15.
At the terminal, drop-off is 10:00–15:00 and collection is 10:00–16:00. Arrival-day bags are due at the property around 16:00. An early bus may get you there before the desk opens; a late one may miss drop-off. Choose the bus and service together.
Cash, valuables and precision equipment such as cameras and computers are excluded. Keep rain protection and warm layers with you too. For delivery back to the terminal, apply through your accommodation and establish its drop-off time. If you leave on an early morning bus, a service with collection starting at 10:00 will not fit.
Start the morning close to your door
Autumn brings large differences between daytime and morning temperatures. Use the official clothing guide to pack warm layers and weather protection, and bring gloves. Standing still for photographs can feel colder than walking.
A short riverside outing followed by breakfast is a worthwhile use of a night here. Ask your accommodation about current paths and start in daylight rather than heading far away in the dark. Let the morning’s actual weather determine the distance.
For a longer walk after checkout, settle where bags can remain, when they must be collected and which bus you will take before setting off. The arrangements for return buses towards Matsumoto and Takayama differ.
Check the property’s final night, not just the closing ceremony
The 2026 closing ceremony is scheduled for November 15, but accommodation finishes on different dates. The official October 6 closing notice, for example, lists October 31 as Myojinkan’s final overnight stay and November 3 for Konashidaira.
If postponing your trip, use the same notice to check restaurants and shops, not only bedrooms. A lunch plan needs somewhere still operating.
The photographs show the Azusa River in a previous autumn and the Imperial Hotel’s exterior. Once your own room is booked, choose one nearby morning walk and leave the rest open. Staying overnight gives you the freedom to linger—or head back inside when you are cold.
