Where to stay for Magome and Tsumago: village evenings or an easier train connection?

Stay in Magome or Tsumago if you want the village after the day visitors have gone. Choose a base near Nakatsugawa Station if the next morning is about catching a train with your bags. Dinner and your first journey the following day make a better starting point than the prettiest room photograph alone.

A village night works best with dinner arranged

Returning to an inn for dinner fits the rhythm of these post towns. Looking for somewhere to eat after a late arrival is a different proposition. Tsumago’s official accommodation guide says the shops and restaurants close at 5pm and specifically warns guests booking room-only stays. Settle the evening meal before you book, rather than assuming there will be a convenience store or a late restaurant nearby.

Individual inns have quite different arrangements. Matsushiroya in Tsumago, for example, lists check-in from 3pm to 6pm, rooms divided by sliding screens, and no accommodation for food allergies or vegetarian meals. Its English notice asks overseas guests to book through the tourist information centre or Emilia Travel. These are Matsushiroya’s conditions, not rules for every inn in Tsumago.

Choose the village for the morning you want

If you plan to walk from Magome over the pass to Tsumago, sleeping in Magome puts you at the start. Have breakfast, spend a little time in the village and set off. Magome’s main street is a slope, though. Look at the walk from the bus stop to the actual entrance, especially with a wheeled suitcase.

Accommodation also varies in format. Tawaraya, partway up Magome, is a whole traditional house rented to one party. That is a different search from booking one room in a small inn. Choose the actual meal plan as well as the building.

Tsumago suits a slower morning among the wooden houses, or a walk that finishes with a short trip back to your inn. The official accommodation guide notes that the village has no hot-spring facilities and describes the older room arrangements found here, including differences in locks and bathrooms. Choose this for the post-town setting, not as a substitute for an onsen resort with private bathing facilities.

Nakatsugawa Station building and the forecourt

Nakatsugawa is the practical choice before an onward train

If you leave for Nagoya or another destination early the next day, sleeping near Nakatsugawa Station removes a bus-to-train connection from that morning. You trade an evening in the village for a simpler departure.

Nakatsugawa City describes the bus ride from the station to Magome as roughly 25 minutes. The railway station is not in Magome itself. Think door to station: a Nakatsugawa base means hotel, bus and village; a Tsumago base can mean inn, local transport and Nagiso Station.

The current Kitaena bus timetable page lists the Magome route and the Sakashita route linking Nakatsugawa, Tsumago and Nagiso. Select the weekday or weekend/holiday timetable and the stop nearest your accommodation. An old brochure is not a reliable timetable for the night you have booked.

Two ways to use the overnight stop

  • For time in the village: arrive in Magome during the afternoon, walk to the inn, eat there and leave for the trail after breakfast. Decide what happens to the large bags before you start walking.
  • For the onward journey: visit the post towns during the day, return to Nakatsugawa by bus, sleep near the station and take the train the next morning. Leave the evening village walk out of this version.

These are planning examples. Fit the inn’s dinner time and the bus you will actually take around them; move an extra stroll to the next morning if it would make you late for dinner.

Give the bags a plan of their own

For a return to the same inn, ask about storage after checkout and when you can collect your bags. If you are walking onward, distinguish any delivery arranged by your accommodation from the seasonal tourist-office luggage service.

The route direction, seasonal luggage transfer and bus back are covered in our autumn Magome–Tsumago walking guide. Tell your inn which bus stop you expect to reach and at what time: it gives them something concrete to work with when discussing dinner and your luggage.
