Missed the Last Train in Japan? What to Check in the First Five Minutes
You reach the station after trains have finished, and the journey planner offers no route to the hotel. Before walking around looking for an answer, check where you are and how far the hotel is.

Check three options first: another rail route, the likely taxi cost and somewhere nearby that can accommodate you tonight. Research them in a well-lit place with people around until you have a plan.
Alternative lines and remaining connections
Set your journey planner to now, and search not only your hotel’s nearest station but also stations within walking distance or a short taxi ride. Boarding the first train is not enough if the connecting service has already finished. Check that the route works through the final transfer.
A taxi back to the hotel
A taxi may be straightforward if the hotel is a few kilometres away. Use the station taxi rank where available, or check an available ride-booking app. Display the hotel name and Japanese address on your phone to communicate the destination.
Before boarding, check whether the taxi accepts the payment method you have. JNTO’s taxi guide notes that cards are generally usable in major-city taxis, while rural taxis may require cash. Keep the hotel’s Japanese address ready and ask about the fare estimate for the whole remaining journey; having an IC card for trains does not establish that this taxi accepts it.
For a longer distance, compare an estimated fare with nearby room availability before deciding. Late-night charges and taxi availability depend on the area, time and operator; check the app or rank information.

Somewhere to stay tonight
There may be no late-opening venue nearby. Capsule hotels can be full, and some properties do not accept new check-ins late at night. Check whether you can stay from now, not just opening hours.
Before an early flight or Shinkansen journey, getting reliable rest and being able to leave in the morning may matter more than finding the cheapest way to wait until dawn.
If a train ends partway, assess the remaining distance
A last train may finish before your hotel’s station. Check the distance from where you are and whether another line still runs. Taking a taxi only for the remaining section can cost less than using it for the entire journey.
Avoid losing more time on uncertain connections. If the route is unclear, switch to a taxi or nearby accommodation.
The last complete route for your next evening out
Before entering a restaurant or bar, look up the final route back to your hotel. You need a journey that still works through every connection, not simply the last departure of one train. Check the day’s information, as timetables and services can change.
