Tokyo–Hakone–Kyoto: Luggage, a Ryokan Night and the Odawara Connection

For a trip from Tokyo to Hakone and then Kyoto, you do not need to return to Tokyo after your ryokan night. Continue west on the Tokaido Shinkansen from Odawara. Decide how you will reach Odawara while choosing your accommodation, rather than leaving the connection until checkout.

Take less luggage into Hakone

If your Kyoto hotel accepts deliveries, sending your main suitcase from Tokyo to Kyoto lets you carry only what you need for one night. Match the delivery date, booking name and receiving hotel. Keep medication, valuables, chargers and a change of clothes with you. Establish the delivery time for your actual sending point and destination before handing over the bag.

Station-to-hotel delivery within Hakone is a different service from forwarding luggage to Kyoto. The Hakone Carry Service has acceptance deadlines, so do not build a late-arrival day around using it.

Search for your Kyoto train from Odawara

Choose a Shinkansen service that stops at Odawara. Search your travel date to compare through services to Kyoto with journeys involving a change. Look at the number of connections and the Kyoto arrival time, not just the train name. A little more interchange time makes room for moving luggage, using the toilet or buying something for the journey.

Break the trip from your hotel into its actual parts: the nearest station or bus stop, Hakone-Yumoto and Odawara. A morning from Gora may start on the mountain railway; one from Sengokuhara or Lake Ashi may begin by bus. Being allowed to keep your room until checkout does not mean leaving at checkout will get you to your reserved train.

If you sightsee again, avoid a luggage detour

For a short morning walk followed by Kyoto, taking your bag straight from the hotel is simple. For sightseeing into the afternoon, compare station storage, lockers and hotel-to-station delivery. Work out how your final stop connects to Odawara first; that tells you where it makes sense to leave the bag.

Do not automatically buy transport as though you were returning to Tokyo. Compare a one-way ticket into Hakone with a pass covering the local area. The Freepass coverage and prices help you avoid paying for a return leg you will not use.

If you have dinner booked in Kyoto, leave room for the journey from Kyoto Station to your hotel too. Choosing a train that gets you settled before dinner is often more useful than adding one final Hakone stop.
