Tokyo to Hakone: Choose Your Train by Where You Are Staying
If you are staying near Shinjuku, a direct Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto is a straightforward start. From a hotel near Tokyo or Shinagawa Station, travelling via Odawara may make more sense. Compare the journey from your hotel, not just the time spent on the fastest train. Transfers become a bigger part of the decision when you have luggage.

From Shinjuku, start with the Romancecar
Odakyu’s Romancecar has reserved seats throughout. Choose a service bound for Hakone-Yumoto and you can stay in your seat all the way to Hakone’s main gateway. The operator advertises a fastest journey of 75 minutes; use the arrival time of your actual service when planning the day.
You need both a base-fare ticket and a limited-express ticket. A Hakone Freepass does not cover the Romancecar supplement. Observation seats cost the same limited-express fare as ordinary seats, but you must choose a train and carriage that actually offer them. Not every Romancecar has that front-window view.
If you reach Shinjuku on a JR train, allow time to find the Odakyu departure area. Buying a drink, locating the platform and moving a suitcase through a large station are all easier before the last few minutes.

From Tokyo or Shinagawa, compare routes via Odawara
The Shinkansen takes you to Odawara, where you change to the Odakyu/Hakone Tozan side for Hakone-Yumoto. Search specifically for Odawara: not every Tokaido Shinkansen service stops there. Compare the final arrival at Hakone-Yumoto, including the connection, rather than treating Odawara as the end of the journey.
Ordinary JR Tokaido Line trains are another way to reach Odawara. They avoid a Shinkansen supplement, but you do not have a reserved seat. Decide whether saving money or sitting down for a rest matters more that morning.
Local trains: count the connections as well as the cost
From Shinjuku, ordinary Odakyu services also provide a route to Hakone-Yumoto. Search the complete itinerary and read the destination and interchange stations. A faster train on the first leg is not automatically the quickest overall if it leaves you waiting for a connection.
If you have a long walking day ahead, reserving a seat outbound and choosing your return later can be a useful compromise.
- Near Shinjuku: look first at a direct Hakone-Yumoto Romancecar.
- Near Tokyo or Shinagawa: compare Shinkansen and ordinary Tokaido Line routes via Odawara.
- Continuing to Kyoto: buy transport around the onward itinerary rather than automatically choosing a Tokyo return ticket.
Hakone-Yumoto is the gateway, not the whole destination. Gora, Sengokuhara and Lake Ashi require another journey. Choose your accommodation area before buying tickets, and consider station-to-hotel luggage delivery if you want to start exploring without a suitcase.
